Move a ChatGPT conversation to Claude
There is no direct transfer between ChatGPT and Claude. The reliable way is to export the ChatGPT chat as a Markdown file, then attach that file to a new Claude chat or add it to a Claude Project's knowledge. Claude reads the whole history and you continue where you left off.
With MarkMyChat (about 10 seconds)
- Open the ChatGPT chat and export it as Markdown with MarkMyChat.
- In Claude, start a chat and attach the .md file, or open a Project and add it under Project knowledge.
- Say: "This is my previous conversation. Continue from the last answer."
The manual way (paste)
- Copy the ChatGPT answers you need, one by one.
- Paste them into a new Claude chat with "Here is my earlier conversation".
- Ask Claude to continue.
The catch: Long pastes get truncated, your prompts are missing, and code formatting breaks, so Claude loses half the context.
Tips
- Use "Pick turns" to drop dead ends so Claude reads only what matters.
- For a whole project, export several chats and add them all to one Claude Project.
- The same works the other way: export from Claude, attach in ChatGPT.
Questions
Can I import ChatGPT history into Claude?
Not automatically. Export the chat to a file and attach it to Claude; Claude then has the full context.
How do I move a whole ChatGPT project to Claude?
Export each chat in the project as Markdown and add all the files to one Claude Project as knowledge.
Will Claude understand the exported file?
Yes. Each turn is labelled with who said it, so Claude can follow the conversation.
