Export ChatGPT conversations to Markdown

To export a ChatGPT chat to Markdown, open it and click Markdown in the MarkMyChat panel. You get a .md file with your prompts and the answers, fenced code blocks with language tags, GFM tables and a front-matter header with the title, date and source link, ready for Obsidian, Notion or a GitHub repo.

With MarkMyChat (about 10 seconds)

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Click Markdown, then Export (or Copy to put it on the clipboard).
  3. Drop the .md into your vault or repo.

The manual way (copy button)

  1. Hover an answer and click the copy icon; ChatGPT copies that answer as Markdown.
  2. Paste into your .md file.
  3. Type your own prompt above it, and repeat per answer.

The catch: Works per answer only. A 40-turn research chat means 40 copies, and your prompts are not copied.

Tips

  • Turn on Append mode to keep one growing research log file instead of many small ones.
  • Auto-save writes each new answer to the log as you chat.
  • Front matter makes chats searchable by date and platform in Obsidian.

Questions

Does the Markdown keep code blocks?

Yes. Code is fenced with the language tag, so it highlights in Obsidian and GitHub.

Can I export to Obsidian?

Yes. Save the .md into your vault folder. Front matter (title, date, source) is included.

Does it work on Claude and Gemini too?

Yes. The same Markdown export works on Claude, Gemini, Grok, Google AI Mode, DeepSeek, Perplexity and Meta AI.
