Save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF
To save a ChatGPT chat as a PDF, open the conversation, click Export in the MarkMyChat panel, choose PDF and press Save as PDF in the preview. The whole thread is kept, including code blocks and tables. Without an extension, use your browser's Print > Save as PDF, which often cuts long chats and code.
With MarkMyChat (about 10 seconds)
- Open the chat. The MarkMyChat panel sits at the side.
- Click PDF. A clean preview opens with only the conversation, no sidebar.
- Choose a theme (Editorial, Clean or Dark) and press Save as PDF.
The manual way (browser print)
- Open the chat on chatgpt.com and scroll to the top so every message loads.
- Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac).
- Pick "Save as PDF" as the printer, set margins to Default, turn on Background graphics.
- Save.
The catch: Print uses the page layout, so the sidebar and input box print too, long code lines get cut off at the page edge, and very long chats may not fully load before printing.
Tips
- Use "Pick turns" to drop the back-and-forth and keep only the answers you need.
- Code blocks wrap instead of running off the page.
- Dark theme is easier on screens; Clean prints best on paper.
Questions
Can I save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF for free?
Yes. Browser print is free but messy. MarkMyChat's PDF export is also free and keeps formatting.
Does ChatGPT have a built-in PDF export?
No. ChatGPT can export all your data as a zip (Settings > Data controls > Export data), but there is no button to save one chat as a PDF.
Will the PDF keep code blocks and tables?
With MarkMyChat, yes: code stays monospaced and wrapped, tables stay tables. Browser print often cuts both.
Can I export only part of a chat?
Yes. Open "Pick turns", tick the messages you want, then export to PDF.
